I don't know if you've been paying attention to news about the show since you stopped watching, but Elena did end up choosing Damon. I wasn't really happy about it because I hated that pairing and it ended up swallowing up the show. Nina Dobrev (Elena) has now left the show, so with this new season starting on Thursday the show will be Elena less.
